Kalmegh is a basically forest herb. Now a days,some people have started growing it as a cash crop.I have also cultivated kalmegh in my field because this herb can be cultivated in any type of soil,even rocky terrain. It hardly need any irrigation.
Its botanical name is Andrographis paniculta. It is very very bitter( kadwa) ,more than neem. It is very good for diabetes,malaria,dengue,liver,digestive system,various skin diseases,blood purification etc.Govt. of M P forest dept.once prepared one lakh sapplings and distributed it free of cost in Khandwa( where I belong) to be planted in flower pot. If somebody is suffering from fever,malaria,chikangunia take two leaves of kalmegh,boil it in one cup of water,when the water is half cup,remove the leaves,and drink the water.Hardly two or three times,and you are free from all these problems.I take kalmegh powder in my ayurvedic mixture daily.Even mosquitos are scared to bite me,( may be my blood has also become bitter( kadwa) .Might be mosquitos have spread this message in their community and they like only sweet blood which I do'nt have.It is said about kalmegh cultivation that neither dhor( animal) khaye,na hi chor le jaye( neither animal eat it nor thieves take it).
